Slovakia first attempted to enter the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993 in Millstreet, Ireland, however were unsuccessful in qualifying to the contest
Slovenská Televízia (STV), the Slovakian broadacter, selected Slovakian Elán to represent them for the first time in Eurovision Song Contest history. The song that represented Slovakia in Kvalifikacija za Millstreet was "Amnestia na neveru" ("Amnesty to infidelity").
Due to the creation of new countries throughout Europe in recent years (due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and disintegration of Yugoslavia), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) set out to counter overcrowding in the contest by introducing a one-off contest to select three countries that would perform at Eurovision. Seven countries in total participated in this contest, with only the top three countries gaining a place in the contest.
Kvalifikacija za Millstreet was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 3 April 1993. At the contest Slovakia performed 7th in the running order, following Slovenia. Elán received 50 points for their song and performance, placing 4th out of 7 and failing to qualify for Eurovision.
